Everything I Know About Beauty (And Some Guesses)

Hi, Tuesday! It’s my favorite day of the week because it’s “Hattie writes whatever she wants” day. Now, you might be thinking “Hattie…this is your newsletter. You can ALWAYS write whatever you want.” Yeah, but.

Last week I wrote about how much I miss beauty blogs and I emphatically insisted that writing my own beauty blog is not the solution! But of course, that made me think of some of the best hacks/tips/secrets/products/ideas/experiences I’ve accumulated over the years. Plus, a couple people have come to me with beauty-related questions recently, and now that I’m no longer in a lifestyle writing role at the Ol’ Day Job, I thought it might be fun to do a big beauty brain dump here.

The first beauty writing I ever published was actually a guest post on Chloe’s blog, close to ten years ago. It’s offline now but it was a “top lip colors for spring” story and photographing the looks remains one of my favorite memories. After writing that, I moved to New York and began working in magazines, so I had access to sprawling beauty closets, massive PR boxes and even a few beauty products that never hit shelves. As such, this is sort of Hattie’s Beauty Philosophies 101. I reserve the right to do this again in six months or so, when I think of more Hot Beauty Tips for you.

I would also like to formally thank my mother for not strangling me when, at 14, I got home during the last week of school and said “I think this summer I really want to focus on my hair.”
