Hi all! We’re one-third of the way through NaPoWriMo. Can you believe it?! I’m actually a little bit impressed by my diligence this year – maybe knowing you all will be reading my Wednesday draft dump helps keep me accountable.
So far, I’ve been giving most formal poetry a wide berth; I have a lot of free verse and four honest-to-God prose poems. But there is one rhyming poem among my current drafts! You’re welcome, mom!
That one’s about our family Easter egg hunt. Speaking of Easter eggs, one poem inspired by Taylor Swift’s reported breakup with Joe Alwyn. In another, I write about myself by name and in the third person, which I tried once (in 2020) and haven’t done directly since – I’m considering making this into a series if I have the right inspiration.
I’ve used a couple of tactics from my little toolkit of weekly poetry prompts. I wrote one poem using this gesture drawing exercise, and another is a standard list poem. I’m interested to see my “stats” at the end of the month, as casually as I’m keeping them. And I hope you’re eager to see my messy first attempts in the Wednesday draft dump, mere days away!
I’ll be back tomorrow with a brief (writing-adjacent but not writing-centric) essay. And on Thursday, I’ll be taking a close look at one of my own favorite poems.
Thanks for reading. I hope you’re writing too!
