Hi! Short one today because I am on vacation. Big Vegas doesn’t even want me sending you this message…they say what happens here can never be heard by the uninitiated…
I haven’t been home a single weekend in October, but after this one I’m going to be back to a more regular writing schedule!
Do You Know Who I Am?????
I had a somewhat weird week of Interactions With Strangers this week. I think it may be a side effect of chopping off all my hair, but I seem to have become some sort of enigma!
*multiple people this week have asked if I’m “in college, or still finishing up high school”
*minutes after one of these interactions, a considerably older single father of two asked me for my number (I recognize the hypocrisy in judging his age based on appearance, but again, this was within an hour of someone asking if I was 18 yet) (my response was “I encourage you to submit any professional inquiries through my website,” which left us both feeling weird and confused)
*a server at a bar insisted I was her daughter’s teacher and apologized for all the dress code violations last week; she also tried to insist I had a Pinot noir “last time I was here” (I had been there days before and did NOT have a Pinot noir) (the bar was loud enough that I did not realize I had gravely misunderstood her until it was too late/awkward to correct it)
*a man here in Vegas walked up to me and asked “are you from Philadelphia?” When I said no, he walked away, and I’m kind of disappointed because he didn’t follow up by hitting on me with the line “because you’re the only Phil I delphia!”
Okay, I gotta go navigate around fellow tourists taking blurry photos of the Bellagio. My only official reading recommendation this week is: Wuthering Heights reading season is upon us. I am only on the first couple chapters and forgot it is, before being tragic and creepy, a rollicking good time. Still think they should do a Heathcliff cartoon strip series that references this book (put Cathy in a ham helmet you cowards!!!!). Also, if you haven’t already picked up a copy of Madness, Rack and Honey, a book I have been badgering everyone about for ages, see if you can get it from the library and read Mary Ruefle’s phenomenal essay about theme, Florida, and Las Vegas.
