Hi! The newsletter is on “spring break” to prep for National Poetry Writing Month. Please expect super-brief emails all week.
On April 1st, I will begin my quest to write 30 poems in 30 days. It’s what that ESPN series “30 for 30” is about1.
You’re welcome to write along with me! To kickstart your writing, here are a few resources for prompts.
Maya C. Popa, the Poetry Editor of Publishers Weekly, has an awesome Substack. Along with prompts and themed roundups of poems, she also publishes in-depth readings of great poets.
I find about half the tools on this website extremely helpful, and about half of them are not for me. But! Along with things like a novel character sheet, there’s a list of 100 (brief) prompts.
The Poetry Foundation has “learning prompts” which include a great variety of ideas and activities for varied skill levels.
Every year, there’s a thing called “Inktober” where artists paint/draw/create an image based on a list of prompts. It’s NaPoWriMo for visual artists. But! When I’m really stuck I look at old Inktober lists and I just write about whatever I’m “assigned” that calendar day.
Excited to write with you all!
I assume.
Wishing you a fruitful NaPoWriMo, Hattie Jean. I haven't done it for a few years, and I don't think I'll be 100% successful this year, but I'm going to make an effort to do some work every day. Thanks for the resources and the inspiration.
